About Allan Wesley
I grew up with two siblings in Edmonton's inner city near NAIT. After grade seven, our family moved to the lovely suburb of Fort Saskatchewan, where I graduated from Our Lady of the Angels in a class of only 28 students.
I'm a University of Alberta alumnus - three times over - with a B.Com (Finance), B.Sc (Actuarial Science) and a M.A. (Economics). No, I didn't get those degrees all at once. After completing my B.Com, I worked here and there before meeting my wife.
One of the biggest turning points in my leadership journey was the 13-week leadership training course (aka bootcamp) in Chilliwack while in the Canadian Forces Reserves. Even though I wasn’t in the Reserves for long, that experience really stuck with me. The training was intense, challenging, and completely outside my comfort zone—but it taught me a lot about discipline, teamwork, and pushing through when things get tough. While in the Reserves, I didn’t travel far—my most “exotic” journey was to Wainwright—but the lessons I learned went way beyond geography. That time shaped how I approach leadership and life in general, and I still carry those lessons with me today.
My wife, Joy, and I started a few business ventures - some successful, others not so much. Running our small businesses gave me a real chance to develop—not just as a leader, but in understanding how all the moving parts of a business come together. It was a crash course in everything from decision-making to problem-solving, and it gave me a deep appreciation for the challenges entrepreneurs face every day.
Later, we sold those businesses and went back to university. Whilst at university one of my professors, Giseon Ho, suggested that I teach statistics labs at MacEwan University. To be honest, I thought she was crazy. At that time, I had never thought about teaching.
After some prodding, I went to MacEwan to meet with the Math/Statistics Department Chair, David McLaughlin. David was my kind of crazy, so he gave me my first teaching opportunity (5 sections of Statistics 151 labs). From the first minute teaching, I knew I had found my calling and I have loved teaching (and not just in the classroom) ever since.
I now teach Math, Statistics, and Finance at the School of Business within MacEwan University. Earning the Distinguished Teaching Award, MacEwan University's highest teaching accolade, was the high point of my teaching career. Even more humbling, over 25 MacEwan students and alums signed my award nomination (during COVID!!). Also, as an Associate Professor, I have held several leadership roles including 3 years as the Chair of the School of Business's Curriculum Committee. This was an important position that required extensive consensus building amongst members with strongly held views.
In addition to my love of teaching, I enjoy volunteering in Fort Saskatchewan. Through my roles as Treasurer of the Fort Saskatchewan Nourishment Centre, long-time Chair of the Heartland Monitoring Partnership, and Chair of the Fort Saskatchewan Policing Committee, I have gained valuable governance and leadership skills. These positions have deepened my understanding of community needs and strengthened my ability to collaborate, make informed decisions, and lead with integrity. I genuinely love serving in these capacities, especially because of the inspiring volunteers in Fort Saskatchewan who are so dedicated to building a stronger, more connected community.
